Sunday Series Spotlight: The Aftertime Trilogy

The Aftertime Trilogy by Sophie Littlefield

Genre: Post Apocalyptic, Horror, Paranormal (Zombies)

This is a provocative series featuring Cass Dollar, a young woman who is carrying around a lot of emotional baggage and struggling to rebuild her life which had fallen into shambles even before the zombie apocalypse consumed the world. For Cass the only good thing to come out of this mass horror is that she’s finally able to regain custody of her young daughter, Ruthie, until horrifying events separate them again. Later Cass finds herself hundreds of miles away from her daughter, awakening bewildered, physically scarred, and with no idea how she got there. That’s how the first  book opens, and it grabbed my attention right from the start and, figuratively speaking, I was glued to the pages until the end.

Aftertime (Aftertime # 1)

Publication Date: February 22, 2011

2f404-goodreads-badge-add-plus

Awakening in a bleak landscape as scarred as her body, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls surviving something terrible. Having no idea how many weeks have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: Ruthie has vanished.

And with her, nearly all of civilization.

Where once-lush hills carried cars and commerce, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaters — people turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.

In a broken, barren California, Cass will undergo a harrowing quest to get Ruthie back. Few people trust an outsider, let alone a woman who became a zombie and somehow turned back, but she finds help from an enigmatic outlaw, Smoke. Smoke is her savior, and her safety.

For the Beaters are out there.

And the humans grip at survival with their trigger fingers. Especially when they learn that she and Ruthie have become the most feared, and desired, of weapons in a brave new world….

Aftertime is my favorite book in the trilogy because it focuses on Cass’s journey to find Ruthie and to be different from the kind of woman she once was not too long ago. She’s such a complex, complicated, and flawed character. Littlefield has done an amazing job in creating a three-dimensional characters, like Cass, that you might meet in real life. Cassie’s not a black and white, good or bad character. In fact, none of the main characters you meet and follow in the series are. Survival becomes the number one motive that drives them. In this first book, though, survival without Ruthie is meaningless to Cassie. She may have failed her daughter in the pre-zombie world, but she’s determined to be a better mother to her daughter, and she must go to great lengths to try to get her daughter out of the clutches of a female religious cult whose beliefs and lifestyle made gave me chill bumps as I read about their influence on the women who are just seeking safety and shelter from the hordes of “Beaters,” infected humans who’ve become cannibalistic creatures who feast upon the flesh and blood of survivors.

Cover Reveal for Jennifer L. Armentrout’s new Wicked Trilogy

Jennifer L. Armentrout has a new urban fantasy trilogy coming out, and the first book, Wicked, is set to be released this December. What do you think of the cover?

Wicked AmazonGRSW

Wicked (A Wicked Saga # 1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

A broken engagement sends Graciela Harper crawling back to Heron Creek with her tail between her legs, but finds the sleepy little town too changed to set her life right. Not even her budding drinking problem can obscure her Gramps’s failing health, or erase the mental picture of her first love happily married to her childhood best friend. To top it all off, she’s having a heck of time convincing the town’s dashing young mayor of her unfit-for-dating status.

When the ghost of 18th century lady pirate Anne Bonny starts insisting on a near daily audience, Graciela has to confront something else she never expected—being certifiably nuts at twenty-five years old.

Her brand new “I don’t give a crap” attitude makes it easy to dismiss the mysterious threats that seem to be tied to her search for more information on the long dead pirate, but when her family becomes a target, Gracie knows she needs to find out why the ghost insists on being a constant, reeking companion.

If Graciela can put aside her prejudice against people without a pulse, she may discover that Anne Bonny’s problems are intricately linked with her own. The past harbors answers could help the cantankerous spirit find closure, but she is, after all, already dead. If Graciela doesn’t move fast, she might find herself doing the haunting, instead of the other way around.

Book Tour for Descending: A Gina Harwood Novel (GHS #2)

It centers around homicide detectives Gina Harwood and Morgan Snyder who investigate supernatural mysteries and crimes. Descending, the second installment, has recently been released, and the first chapter of the book is available for you to read. I’ve also included information on the first book in the series, Behind the Veil, which introduces readers to this fictitious world where police procedure and the paranormal intersect.

Jace has been the property of the U.S. Army since they found out about her when she was five, and now she has become one of its most valuable weapons.  But Jace is not the only one of her kind. Gray is one too, but with the help of his sister, he has spent most of his sixteen years hiding from the Army.

Now, the Army has found out about Gray and they cannot allow him to roam free.  Operating on the theory that it takes one to catch one, Jace is send out with a special ops squad to hunt Gray down. But Jace is not the only one pursuing Gray, and the competition is after her too.  What ensues is a desperate chase through city after city as duty and honor collide with love and sacrifice.

If this book catches your interest, the author has made the first four chapters from the book available to read in PDF format: http://www.kdvanbrunt.com/#!chapters-1-4/c1cqu  on his website.  I had the chance to read them, and, because the story is narrated in first-person alternating dual POVs from sixteen-year-old Jacycee (Jace) and Gray, I was easily pulled into the story and intrigued by their special abilities. By the end of the preview, I wanted to keep reading, which is a good sign, so this book is  going on my reading list! I’m not sure if this is a planned series, but I can certainly see the potential for it based on what I’ve read thus far.

Sunday Spotlight Series: Red-Hot SEALS by Trish McCallan

For all of you military romantic suspense readers looking for a new series, I’d like to suggest Trish McCallan’s Red-Hot SEALS, a planned series of four novels, two of which are available now. The major ongoing plot involves four navy SEALS who are targeted and drawn into a terrorist group’s nefarious plan that will have worldwide repercussions if the group succeeds. The gradual unfolding plot is engaging, violent, and suspenseful as the heroes are forced to fight against these ruthless, lethal antagonists on U.S. soil, which, unfortunately, brings their actions under the scrutiny of the DOJ.  As the team members navigate their way through hijackings, kidnappings, torture, and murder to expose these powerful thugs, each also finds himself falling in love.

In both of these books, the romantic angle is nicely intertwined with the larger plot, and the chemistry and sexual tension between the couples is magnetic and intense.  Although the love scenes in each book are sparse, when they do occur, they offer the sizzle that will appeal to many romance readers. I appreciate that in each book, the romance complements the major plot instead of overshadowing or distracting readers from the action and danger that surround the team.  Both novels do include paranormal aspects that add an additional layer of complexity to the plot and required me to suspend my disbelief, especially in the second novel, Forged in Ash.

This series must be read from the beginning in order to understand the scope of the plot and follow along. It’s definitely a worthwhile read.
