The nightmare that she thought was long over starts again as powerful forces descend upon Prescott City to seek her out. With her parents and Joseph Lonetree’s help, Sarah must stand up to an evil much more powerful than the one she faced in the caves a decade earlier. Sunday Series Spotlight: The Aftertime Trilogy

The Aftertime Trilogy by Sophie Littlefield

Genre: Post Apocalyptic, Horror, Paranormal (Zombies)

This is a provocative series featuring Cass Dollar, a young woman who is carrying around a lot of emotional baggage and struggling to rebuild her life which had fallen into shambles even before the zombie apocalypse consumed the world. For Cass the only good thing to come out of this mass horror is that she’s finally able to regain custody of her young daughter, Ruthie, until horrifying events separate them again. Later Cass finds herself hundreds of miles away from her daughter, awakening bewildered, physically scarred, and with no idea how she got there. That’s how the first  book opens, and it grabbed my attention right from the start and, figuratively speaking, I was glued to the pages until the end.

Aftertime (Aftertime # 1)

Publication Date: February 22, 2011

2f404-goodreads-badge-add-plus

Awakening in a bleak landscape as scarred as her body, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls surviving something terrible. Having no idea how many weeks have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: Ruthie has vanished.

And with her, nearly all of civilization.

Where once-lush hills carried cars and commerce, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaters — people turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.

In a broken, barren California, Cass will undergo a harrowing quest to get Ruthie back. Few people trust an outsider, let alone a woman who became a zombie and somehow turned back, but she finds help from an enigmatic outlaw, Smoke. Smoke is her savior, and her safety.

For the Beaters are out there.

And the humans grip at survival with their trigger fingers. Especially when they learn that she and Ruthie have become the most feared, and desired, of weapons in a brave new world….

Aftertime is my favorite book in the trilogy because it focuses on Cass’s journey to find Ruthie and to be different from the kind of woman she once was not too long ago. She’s such a complex, complicated, and flawed character. Littlefield has done an amazing job in creating a three-dimensional characters, like Cass, that you might meet in real life. Cassie’s not a black and white, good or bad character. In fact, none of the main characters you meet and follow in the series are. Survival becomes the number one motive that drives them. In this first book, though, survival without Ruthie is meaningless to Cassie. She may have failed her daughter in the pre-zombie world, but she’s determined to be a better mother to her daughter, and she must go to great lengths to try to get her daughter out of the clutches of a female religious cult whose beliefs and lifestyle made gave me chill bumps as I read about their influence on the women who are just seeking safety and shelter from the hordes of “Beaters,” infected humans who’ve become cannibalistic creatures who feast upon the flesh and blood of survivors.

The Zombie Zone: Cover Reveal for Dead New World

I just discovered this new post-apocalyptic zombie novel set to release this fall and wanted to share the cover that has just been released. The premise of the book is a 180 degree turn from the zombie-related fiction I usually read. Instead of destroying the zombies, a surviving cult wants to embrace their existence and turn humans into one of the undead.  The book cover is striking and… hmm…the concept of a human-zombie hybrid sounds intriguing.  I’ll be keeping a watch for this book’s release.

Zombies aren’t mindless anymore.

Before the world fell into chaos, the undead existed only in the imagination. Now, more of them walk the earth than living. Zombies move about freely, while humans entomb themselves inside concrete barricades to stay alive.

All that, while the leader of a powerful cult – known only as Reverend – becomes the next threat to the rebuilding United States. Believing zombies to be God’s latest creation, making humanity obsolete, he wants to give every man, woman, and child the chance to become one. With his combined army of humans and zombies, he may well get his wish.

Best friends Holt and Ambrose went up against the Reverend once. Holt lost a foot and a zombie bit Ambrose…though he survived the virus, only to become a human-zombie hybrid, reviled by the living and unwelcome among the dead. When the Reverend kidnaps the woman Holt loves, the race is on to save her from a fate worse than death.

Book Tour for Descending: A Gina Harwood Novel (GHS #2)

The Gina Harwood  series caught my attention when it was compared to the X-Files, of which I’m a huge fan. It centers around homicide detectives Gina Harwood and Morgan Snyder who investigate supernatural mysteries and crimes. Descending, the second installment, has recently been released, and the first chapter of the book is available for you to read. I’ve also included information on the first book in the series, Behind the Veil, which introduces readers to this fictitious world where police procedure and the paranormal intersect.

In Descending, Gina discovers a mysterious portal in an ordinary wall that leads somewhere few humans were meant to go, while a group of friends set out to make a music video in a creepy old house that goes terribly, horribly wrong.

Book Description halfsize

Corcitura. Some call it hybrid, others half-blood, mongrel, beast. They are all names for the same thing: vampire—the created progeny of the half-wolf, half-vampire, barb-tongued Grecian Vrykolakas, and the suave but equally vicious Russian Upyr. Corcitura: this is what happens when a man is attacked by two vampires of differing species. He becomes an entirely new breed—ruthless, deadly, unstoppable…almost.

London, 1888: Eric Bradburry and Stefan Ratliff, best friends since childhood, have finally succeeded in convincing their parents to send them on a Grand Tour of the Continent. It will be the adventure of a lifetime for the two eighteen-year-old Englishmen, but almost from the moment they set foot on French soil, Eric senses a change in Stefan, a change that is intensified when they cross paths with the enigmatic Vladec Salei and his traveling companions: Leonora Bianchetti, a woman who fascinates Eric for reasons he does not understand, and the bewitching Augustin and Sorina Boroi—siblings, opera impresarios, and wielders of an alarming power that nearly drives Eric mad.

Unable to resist the pull of their new friends, Eric and Stefan walk into a trap that has been waiting to be sprung for more than five hundred years—and Stefan is the catalyst. Terrified by the transformation his friend is undergoing, Eric knows he must get Stefan away from Vladec Salei and Constantinos, the rabid, blood-crazed Vrykolakas, before Stefan is changed beyond recognition. But after witnessing a horrific scene in a shadowed courtyard in Eastern Europe, Eric’s worst fears are confirmed.

Six years removed from the terror he experienced at the hands of Salei and Constantinos, Eric finally believes he has escaped his past. But once marked, forever marked, as he painfully begins to understand. He has kept company with vampires, and now they have returned to claim him for their own.

DS LogoI was born in the little, but big bustling city of Chicago, Illinois. I still live there today and I’m loving every second of it … Except for those harsh cold winters. I started writing short horror stories when I was eleven years old. It wasn’t until 2004 that I decided to take the plunge into the professional literary world when I wrote Desires Unleashed.

I love the supernatural world; I’ve always found it fascinating, especially vampires and shape-shifters. It was my love of the genre that motivated me to create the story I had always wanted to read. I published it, hoping there were other people out there who would be entertained by that same story. I love to entertain people, to offer them that fantasy world they can escape into filled with wonders and good times. I know I appreciate the escapism I’ve delved into when reading a good book.

Some of the accolades I’ve won for my writing are: “New Voice of Today” by A Romance Review, “Rising Star” by Love Romance and “Author of the Month” by Warrior of Words. I’ve been nominated two years in a row in several categories, including “best vampire novel” and “best urban-fantasy” at Love Romance and More. My third novel; The Royal Flush did win honorable mention in 2006.

Galian and Delbeth now have proof that it was Delbeth’s former boyfriend, Johan, who assassinated the old Tribunal. Sunday Series Spotlight: Experiment in Terror Series by Karina Halle

About the Series

I started reading ebooks in 2012 after received an e-reader for Christmas. Although I love technology, I always preferred reading a print copy of the book and having the rich sensory experience of touching and turning the pages. So, I avoided reading online until I realized that Amazon had lots of books available for free downloads, lol and I could get any book I wanted to read instantly without having to wait for shipping.

Moreover, one of the best benefits has been the discovery of some excellent reads from talented independent authors that I, otherwise, probably would never have encountered. Karina Halle’s work is one of those rare gems that I have come to treasure.  I downloaded Darkhouse, the first book in this series when it was offered for free, and from that point, I was hooked on Perry Palomino and Dex Foray’s  journey together into the world of the supernatural where they explore haunted places to capture paranormal evidence for their Internet ghost hunter series, and along the way they must each grapple with literal and figurative demons that have continually tested their sanity.

Here is an overview of the series from Goodreads:

In a large, flaky nutshell, the Experiment in Terror Series is an nine-part sci-fi/fantasy/horror series that revolves around a pair of ghost hunters. Well, aspiring ghost hunters, anyway. After filming a creepy experience in her uncle’s dilapidated lighthouse, 22-year old Perry Palomino becomes a YouTube and internet star overnight. She attracts the attention of Dex Foray, a producer and cameraman for a site that specializes in various webisodes, who convinces her to be a host for a low-budget ghost hunting series. The only problem is, neither Perry or Dex are entirely “with it” — I mean, they see ghosts, after all. And when the duo isn’t wrestling with their very notion of reality, they’re grappling with a working relationship that’s deep-cut with sexual tension. As the series moves on, leading Perry and Dex to new locales and supernatural situations, their lives become more and more intertwined, where they discover that ghosts aren’t the only things that can haunt them.

This is a series that must be read in order, and for all of you paranormal fans out there, I think you’ll find it to be worth your time. Although romance does eventually become a significant aspect of the plot as the series unfolds, the scary, chilling, and downright creepy scenes from Perry and Dex’s adventures will be more than enough to satisfy your paranormal cravings. In fact, I should warn you, this series can be addictive!

The series is comprised of full length novels as well as several novellas. I have highlighted the main books in the series and the novellas I read.

Darkhouse #1

Dark HouseWith all the vampire, werewolf and faerie books out there, it’s easy to become numb to all things supernatural. The antidote? Darkhouse introduces two real and unforgettable characters, Perry Palomino & Dex Foray, amateur ghost hunters who are “attractive, relatable and oddly heroic,” “flawed but loveable,” “slightly crazy” and just the most endearing pair to ever tackle the paranormal…just don’t call them normal.

Darkhouse is a thrilling and sexy new take on concepts like Supernatural and The X-Files, bringing a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been inundated with the dead.

***Darkhouse and the Experiment in Terror series is a horror/romance for mature audiences only. Readers who are easily offended by harsh language should think twice about reading it.

Published March 10, 2012

Favorite Quotes from the book:

“Somehow by dealing with the dead, I had never felt so alive.”

***

“Because sometimes I lie, Perry. We all lie, even you, but not everyone is brave enough to admit it.”  -Dex

***

“If there was a moment that determined the course of my future, I’m pretty sure this was it. I had two somewhat simple choices. I could make a run for it and go back to Uncle Al’s. Back to the bonfire where my cousins and dear sister would be drinking and revel in the normalcy of a Saturday night and forget I ever went to this horrid place and ran into this weirdo. Or I could go with said weirdo up the stairs in this decrepit old lighthouse, which was most likely condemned and unsafe, towards some unknown person (or thing) that was walking around, potentially waiting to murder us in horrific ways.

It didn’t seem like a very hard decision to make. In fact, I think 99.7% of people in the right frame of mind would have picked from column A and gone on with their merry lives. But for some freaking crazy reason, I thought that maybe, just maybe I should go with this stranger up those kelp-ridden stairs and toward the lair of unimaginable horror. You know, because it was the more interesting alternative.” -Perry

Cover Reveal for Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Karina Halle is one of my favorite paranormal romance authors, and I really enjoy following her Experiment in Terror series.  She’s getting to release a new novel early next year, that looks like a captivating read:

DonnersoftheDead.v6.1

Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Publication date: February 24, 2014
Genres: Horror, Romance

 A Standalone Horror Romance

Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.

What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

New Stephen King Release: Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2)

Wow! I’m not a big fan of the horror genre, except around Halloween.  Now, I’ll have a good excuse to watch The Shining again before I read the sequel. I’m so excited!

Doctor Sleep

Published September 24, 2013

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon. (from Amazon)
