Book Blast & Giveaway for The Fallen Siren Series by S.J. Harper

S.J. Harper has recently released Reckoning, the second book in The Fallen Siren series. Based on my experience reading, Cursed, the first full-length novel in this paranormal romance series, I can say it’s one I’d recommend to fans who enjoy plots with supernatural characters. The heroine of the story, Emma, is a siren, which isn’t a common character type in the paranormal fiction I’ve read, and this is what originally drew me to this series, and the characters and plot did not disappoint! You can learn more about all the books in the series below, read an excerpt from from the latest release, and enter a fantastic tour-wide giveaway for a chance to win a Kindle Fire!

Captured (Fallen Siren Prequel #0.5)

RTCaptured1400X2100Join FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.

She’s a Siren. He’s a Werewolf.

Their mission is redemption.

Emma Monroe is a Fallen Siren, cursed by the gods and banished to Earth for her failure to prevent the kidnapping of Persephone. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now she works for the FBI and is on temporary assignment in Charleston. Solving this next missing persons case could be the key to ending her ancient curse—unless the temptation that’s her new partner gets in the way.

Zack Armstrong is a Werewolf. Tall, dark, and dangerous, he currently works for one of the bureau’s elite Child Abduction Rapid Deployment teams. In many respects the man is every bit as mysterious as his secret and perilous past. But there are two things he’s certain about, that he’s going to get his man and his woman.

When Zack finds himself suddenly shy a partner and a third child goes missing in Charleston, Emma goes from consultant to CARD team member in the space of a few hours. The abductions of the first two boys ended in murder, an outcome that neither Zack nor Emma can abide. As they race against time to track down the kidnapper and rescue the latest victim, they find themselves fighting something just as treacherous—a growing attraction that can’t be ignored or dend.

Sunday Series Spotlight: The Division Chronicles & Author Interview

Today, I am pleased to spotlight author Connie L. Smith and her YA urban fantasy/paranormal romance trilogy, The Division Chronicles.  Today’s post features an interview with Ms. Smith and an excerpt from the third book, Enscrolled, which was just released in  mid- October.

Essenced (book 1)Essenced book one cover

Publication Date:  July 2013

Years ago, demons were forced out of the earth’s realm by a band of supernatural fighters, banished from the place and its people in the aftermath of a horrific war. It should’ve ended there – would’ve – if not for the final demon’s claw snagging on the open portal. What felt like victory became only a reprieve, the winning warriors understanding that the tear would spread, and the demons eventually would escape exile. It was only a matter of time, and a need for future defense – a question of genetics and essences, magic and power.

Now, centuries later, a new army must bind together – one of teenagers with inhuman potentials and abilities…

AJ went to bed Sunday night an average teenage girl, clumsy and athletically lacking. So when she wakes up Monday morning with super-strength, she does what any rational person would do: She goes into denial. When a smoking hot guy in a suit shows up, rambling about the end of the war and demons spilling through some kind of rift, she refuses to listen, telling herself he’s insane. Except weird things just won’t quit happening, and the guy keeps popping up in her life, trying to explain the changes suddenly happening within her. Is she crazy, or is this guy… not so crazy after all?

Cover Reveal for Jennifer L. Armentrout’s new Wicked Trilogy

Jennifer L. Armentrout has a new urban fantasy trilogy coming out, and the first book, Wicked, is set to be released this December. What do you think of the cover?

Wicked AmazonGRSW

Wicked (A Wicked Saga # 1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

New Release: AfterLife (The Starbuck Chronicles # 1)

Zoe Dawson has just released the first book in a new adult urban fantasy series she’s writing – The Starbuck Chronicles.   Based on reading the book’s description, I can’t help but be reminded of Kim Harrison’s  The Hollow’s series.  Both are set in a fictional world where supernaturals live openly among humans and both contain plots centered around  a strong female protagonist solving a mystery or murder.  This is  a series I’ll definitely be checking out.

AfterLife(The Starbuck Chronicles # 1)  by Zoe Dawson

Publication Date: May 19, 2014

Genre: Adult Urban Fantasy (with romantic elements)

Series Overview

The fine thread between reality and the fantastical has snapped. The mortal and supernatural must learn to co-exist in post-reality Minneapolis/St. Paul where video games leak monsters into the night, demons roam, thirsting for more than just blood, people are not who or what they seem and a diabolical evil plots and plans to devour the world.

clearergoodreadsicon_thumb.png

BookDescriptionhalfsize.jpg

Lily Starbuck’s day doesn’t start well with blood on the horizon and a grumpy werewolf who refuses to pay his catering bill. Her day only gets worse when she finds out that her business partner in their catering company has embezzled all their available cash.

Lily can get no answers from her partner when she finds her dead. That’s the least of her worries—her landlord is evicting her, she’s being hounded by the Fairy Dust Administration (FDA) who suspects that her partner was dealing in illegal dust, and Lily’s pissed off their werewolf supplier.

With Lily’s very livelihood in jeopardy, she has no choice but to discover who killed her partner and try to track down the cash. She has only Spocko, a small, wizened gnome with just a bit of gremlin blood in him that makes him cantankerous at best to depend on, but he often goes invisible on her. Clues lead her to an open case being investigated by Otherworld Security (O.S.) and the tough O.S. Warden, shapeshifter, Tam Darkwood. And, at the outset of the investigation, a tiny, mythical fire-breathing, red dragon joins her as her trusty (and opinionated) sidekick, Kindle.

It seems a rogue mage has created a video game that is unwarded and game monsters are being released to terrorize the citizens of the Twin Cities. Trouble is Lily has reason to believe that this mage killed her partner.

The investigation takes an unexpected turn when they are led to influential and powerful Archmage Tarquin Wilding and somehow Lily finds herself embroiled in a sinister shadow Fae plot. With her friends at her side, she tackles dangerous and unpredictable supernaturals and monsters with an “all in a day’s work” attitude.

Now, the Army has found out about Gray and they cannot allow him to roam free.  Operating on the theory that it takes one to catch one, Jace is send out with a special ops squad to hunt Gray down. But Jace is not the only one pursuing Gray, and the competition is after her too.  What ensues is a desperate chase through city after city as duty and honor collide with love and sacrifice.

If this book catches your interest, the author has made the first four chapters from the book available to read in PDF format: http://www.kdvanbrunt.com/#!chapters-1-4/c1cqu  on his website.  I had the chance to read them, and, because the story is narrated in first-person alternating dual POVs from sixteen-year-old Jacycee (Jace) and Gray, I was easily pulled into the story and intrigued by their special abilities. By the end of the preview, I wanted to keep reading, which is a good sign, so this book is  going on my reading list! I’m not sure if this is a planned series, but I can certainly see the potential for it based on what I’ve read thus far.

Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Only the descendants of the two men who banished the spirits of an enemy tribe from the material realm know what really happened to the colony. Ellie is one of those descendants—a Curse Keeper. Her father took pains to teach her what he knew of the curse and the responsibilities of its guardians. He taught her that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet, the curse will be lifted, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.

Despite her father’s seriousness, Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes everything she was told is true. For when they meet, it’s like the air is sucked from the room. Collin’s presence is electrifying… and it’s not just attraction Ellie feels, but the inexorable pull toward her destiny. One who insists he’s a divine warrior sent for her protection because she houses an ancient relic with the power to unleash Armageddon. Last time Mira checked, she wasn’t insane. Still, all this celestial mayhem is enough to drive a girl crazy.

Kagan is a member of the Scion, an elite team of immortal warriors selected by Divinity to aid mankind and save the world. After a century alone, Kagan is summoned for a new mission. He’s eager to begin. Eager until he’s informed his mission consists of protecting a woman with no clue to the power she wields. Plus, his briefing fails to prepare him for his new target’s cosmic-sized attitude problem.  As Divinity’s sworn servant, he’s required to fulfill his duty. His oath, however, does not require him to be enthusiastic about his new assignment or warm-and-fuzzy toward his new compatriot. He plans a wham-bam rescue and a quick return to solitude.

The rogue minion attacks—with the backing of a mysterious organization—and all Hades erupts, putting a fast end to any whirlwind escapes. Accustomed to staunch independence, Mira’s survival now requires full cooperation and an unwavering belief in Kagan. The battle-hardened warrior is also forced to chose: between duty and desire. Amidst the turmoil, Kagan and Mira’s undeniable passion draws them closer to each other and down a path neither expected but both yearn for, more than they ever knew.

Will love save the day? The world’s fate depends on the answer.

Book Review 50 percent

The Order of the Black Swan is one of my favorite paranormal romance series. It’s fun, full of drama, action, and nail-biting suspense that never fails to entertain.  This is a serial saga, with each book beginning where the last ended.  I strongly recommend that you read this series in its intended sequence so you are able to understand and fully appreciate the richly developed multiple story threads that consolidate into a creative and complex plot.

This is one of my favorite paranormal series, and I always look forward to the release of the latest book. Plus, Danann is one of those authors who doesn’t keep her fans waiting too long!

 photo tumblr_inline_mhhywzdKzh1qz4rgpYay_zpsb73c2d5e.gif

Danann has created a fascinating multi-dimensional fantasy world that centers on a secret society of Black Swan Knights who volunteer to serve and protect humans from paranormal beings who pose a threat.

In addition, I enjoy this series because of the depth and complexity of the characters. Protagonists featured in one book don’t get pushed aside or have their storylines dropped once the book ends. Instead, they continue to play prominent roles in the following books as the plot evolves.  Danann has created an array of interesting characters who come alive and feel like real people that I would want to spend time with. They are serious about their roles within the organization, yet they are also warm, fun-loving and just down-right entertaining. I’ve become attached to them now, and I care about their successes and failures as they continue to grow and change.

Gathering Storm is the fifth book in the series, and just like all of the previous books, it doesn’t disappoint. In fact, Danann breaks away from her usual pattern of featuring one main couple falling in love. Instead she parallels multiple story threads evenly throughout the book, and romance doesn’t play as heavy of a role as it has in the past.

I interpreted the book’s title to indicate that the focus of this book would be about a central conflict affecting Storm, but I don’t think his situation dominates the book. In many cases, there books tend to have one major plot and one or more subplots. I didn’t see that happening here. Storm, Litha, Rosie, Elora, Glen, and the Z Team all face major struggles that are central to the plot’s progression. Danann uses multiple POVs to develop the plot, and this can be tricky. Too many shifts in characters’ POVs can cause confusion to the point that you can just end up with a muddled mess of a plot. However, Danann skillfully provides multiple perspectives in a way that doesn’t disrupt the smooth flow of the story.

I experienced a range of emotions as I read the book, and if you have been following the series, there are some surprises in store for you.

bnwsupriseofmystery

One of the biggest shockers deals with Litha and Storm’s daughter Rosie.  Another shocker is the arrival of Angel, a character who isn’t very likable at first, but I enjoyed watching the physical and emotional changes he experiences in the new dimension he’s found himself in. He certainly turns Litha’s world upside down.

All of the characters stay true to their established personalities; Ram is just as charming as ever with his good natured teasing and beautifully lilting accent that Danann voices so well.  He’s still and probably always will be my favorite knight. That may change, though, with the addition of the Z Team, an unruly group of knights who don’t play well with others and have a reputation for going rogue.

Deliverance has also become a favorite character. I haven’t really cared for him in the past. He was always amusing, but in this story, he is downright hilarious!

Demon Daddy gets into so much trouble with his daughter, Litha, and even though the situation is grave, it’s also funny as well.

The danger and action really kick in during the latter part of the book, and the drama is intense! Thank goodness the young knight-in-training Spaz is there to ease some of the tension. I will say that I think he could have a successful career as a DJ if things don’t work out with the Black Swan Knights. He is “The Voice of the Fray” and plays a critical role when danger comes swooping in to the Jefferson Unit. His choice of music is clever (Victoria has a great sense of humor in putting the playlist together) even though it annoys the heck out of the B Team.

There are also some sad moments in the book as well, but I won’t give them away.

 photo tumblr_lsnmitNF7j1r4sauvo1_500downanddepressed_zps01e39256.gif
Even though I really enjoyed the book, I was disappointed that the romance between certain couples wasn’t as detailed and descriptive as I would have liked. I missed the flirting and descriptive scenes that lead to falling in love.  I also wish the Z Team had played a more prominent role in the book, but I expect their characters will become more fully developed, and they will play a more significant role as the series continues.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

PREFACE Dunkilly, Ireland

Glendennon Catch caught the eye of the bartender who simply pointed toward a back corner. He couldn’t see what the man pointed to, but he nodded and began making his way toward the rear.

He wound through a few layers of standing people who were holding glass mugs and talking loudly to be heard over the music, until he could see a corner snug in the back. It was close to a window so there was enough light to see, even with the smoke, that the bartender had been right in surmising that he was looking for Z Team.

There they were – the farthest thing from inconspicuous. Glen couldn’t begin to guess how they had managed to be successful vampire slayers when everything about them drew attention and broadcasted vibes of this-is-your-last-chance-to-run. It was a message that floated around them like a diaphanous cloud of warning.

The four of them fit comfortably in a snug designed for eight. That was partly because of their sheer size and partly because they had a casual way of draping arms and legs so that they took up as much space as possible. It also communicated disdain for established notions of propriety. Glen knew instinctively that even the word “propriety” would make Black Swan’s infamous misfits laugh out loud.

One of them was wearing a sleeveless shirt that had once been a denim jacket. His left arm had been transformed into a tattooed sleeve by an intricately inked mural of muted colors. It was odd to see bare biceps when it was brittle-dick cold outside, but Glen supposed that if he’d made that much of an investment in ink he might want to show it off too.

Glen’s initial impression of the guy sitting next to Sleeve was that he should have the nickname, Dark, or Black. He wore black jeans, a black metal band shirt that was probably a collectable, and his spiky hair was so blue black it had to have been dyed that color. All that with eyes so pale he could almost get away with going undercover as a vamp. He wasn’t wearing eyeliner, but the contrast between his ice-color irises and those thick ebony lashes made his eyes pop in a dramatic way that probably drew interest from a lot of babes. The Black Knight. Glen smiled a little to himself. He enjoyed his own company and his own offbeat sense of humor.

The third wore a plain gray long sleeve tee that covered his upper body, but Glen could see black ink climbing out of the neck of the guy’s shirt, stopping just below his pronounced jaw line. Either tribal pattern or angel glyph. Hard to tell with just snake tails in view. He had a serious case of bed head going, probably by design, and one eyebrow that was raised and had been since he’d noticed Glen standing there watching them.

He said something to the others. Then the fourth, the one facing away with one long arm draped over the back of the snug, turned to look at Glen, revealing elfin ears. Those ears were outlined by light brown hair with titian streaks. Same curl as Sir Hawking. Had to be Torrent Finngarick.

They looked exactly the way Glen had expected them to look. Hard. Tough. And like they belonged together. He was thinking, So they’re Black Swan knights with a little bit of a nasty reputation. They put their pants on one leg at a time just like me. Right?

It was an inadequate internal pep talk, but he just wasn’t feeling it. He decided to go with Plan A, which was taking life straight ahead, one step at a time. Glen had a reputation of his own for being easy going, but he made an exception for passive aggressive nonsense. He didn’t like it, didn’t like people who habitually avoided the front door, and didn’t mind letting his irritation with bullshit bubble over.

Plan A meant walking straight up to them, stating his business, hoping for the best, but being prepared for the worst. That was the thought bouncing around in his mind as he observed their reactions to seeing him approach the table.

When he was standing over them, he looked around the table and said, “I’m Glendennon Catch.” Then he zeroed in on Torn. “Sorry for your loss, Sir Finngarick.” He said “sir” quietly enough so that only they heard him, but they got the message. It was as good as a secret handshake. “The office sent me with a message from the HR department.”

They left him standing there for a minute without saying anything or changing expression. It was a thinly disguised intimidation strategy to get him to reveal nervousness, timidity, or some other weakness that would register as a flaw in their eyes. That sort of thing didn’t work on somebody who had inherited the dominant werewolf gene. He could stand there all day without flinching or looking away.

Finally, the big guy with the glyphs crawling up his neck grinned, showing dimples which seemed entirely out of place against the persona he’d so carefully crafted. “So go ahead and deliver your memo, Sweet Cheeks. We’re waiting.”

The other three chuckled softly without taking their eyes off of him. Glen laughed openly and good-naturedly, but let the sound trail off ending in a low level growl, incongruent with the smile on his face. The growl wasn’t loud enough to draw attention from the wake-goers, but it was definitely heard by Z Team. They all sat up a little straighter and took another look at the kid. He had their interest, but that was worlds away from respect.

Looking at Glyphs, he said, “My briefing didn’t mention that any of you are hard of hearing. If you want to call me by a name, it’s Glen.”

Finngarick’s blue eyes twinkled in a way that brought Ram to mind while the other two laughed at Glyphs being put down by a kid who was years away from growing into his big frame.

“Long way to deliver a message. Would you no’ have a pint with us then? Glen.” He reached out with a long leg, put the toe of his scuffed boot through the leg brace of an unoccupied chair, pulled it up to the snug, and made a gesture of invitation. “You’ll find we’re no’ much on formality. Call me Torn.”

Glen nodded then looked at the others. Torn pointed at the guy with the sleeves and said, “This is Gunnar. That’s Raif.” He raised his chin in the direction of ‘black knight’. “The fella with the questionable personality is Bob.”

“Gunnar. Raif, Torn, And Bob. No way.”

Finngarick’s eyes twinkled with that special elvish sparkle. “Aye. Make no mistake. Name’s Bob.”

Glen shook his head. “Let’s rename him.”

Finngarick looked at Bob and then back at Glen. “What we have here gentlemen is a cool, gloomy Irish day with no place to go and no’ a thin’ to do, but have another pint. So I say we’ll play that game. What would you call the man if it was up to you, young emissary?” Glen shrugged. “Come now. No ideas?”

“Well, yeah, I sort of named him in my head on the walk across the bar.”

“Pub,” Torn corrected.

“Yes. Pub. Sorry.”

Bob raised both brows. “I, for one, cannot wait to hear what you named me in your head on your walk across the… pub.”

Glen looked at him with speculation trying to decide whether or not to tell the truth. “Glyphs.”

While Bob studied Glen, his three teammates studied Bob in turn, like they were trying it on for size. Bob lowered his eyebrows and rolled his big shoulders in approval.

Finally Torn nodded as if to say he’d reached a conclusion. “Right you are. Now that you point it out, I can see he’s no’ a Bob. Glyphs suits him fine. Congratulations, trainee. You just named yourself a knight.”

Torn Finngarick called for a Guinness Extra Stout to be served to Glen, who wasn’t used to alcohol at all and certainly wasn’t ready for Irish black beer. He took a manly mouthful, thinking he had arrived, and promptly spewed it all over Torn in a spectacular demonstration of human fountain power. The other three members of Z Team laughed so hard they had to wipe tears.

“That was almost as funny as the night that Chokarzi stripper puked half a gallon of half-digested Cuervo in your face in the middle of a lap dance.”

Glen borrowed a wet bar towel and offered it to Finngarick with a blush. “I’d offer to clean you up, but your file says you prefer to get personal with women.”

Torn took the towel without a word, but with a glint of amusement in his eyes. When he was as clean as was possible without a shower and fresh clothes, he handed the towel to Glen. “Go get yourself somethin’ else. Drinks are on me. Milk maybe?” he teased.

When Glen returned with a mug of root beer, no one asked him what was in the glass. Torn simply motioned to the chair. Glen sat.

“You’re needed at Jefferson Unit. You’re to accompany me to Fort Dixon after the funeral. Your things are being gathered and moved as we speak.”

As Glen looked from one to another, he saw no discernible reaction. They were a cool bunch. He’d give them that.

Glyphs shrugged. “New York’s no worse than any other place. Maybe better than some.”

Finngarick looked at Glen like he was a lab specimen on a microscopic slide. “Would you be happenin’ to know why we’re needed so urgently?”

Glen thought about it for a minute and decided there was no reason to withhold the truth. “Yes.”

A ghost of a smile seemed to cross Finngarick’s handsome elven face. “And would you be sharin’ with us then?”

“Sorry. No.”

Torn glanced at his teammates as if the four could communicate telepathically. “See. The thin’ is, we’re accustomed to hearin’ The Order needs to sweep us further under the rug. No’ brin’ us into the light. We would no’ be the least surprised if you came to say we’re bein’ transferred to Antarctica. But this? Naturally we’re curious, you understand.”

“Of course I understand. But I’m not at liberty to say.”

Torn nodded thoughtfully. “Well, then. Might you be at liberty to say why you were sent to escort us?”

It took Glen less than a second to process whether it might be problematic to divulge that information. “The Jefferson Unit sovereign is retiring. I’m being given a try-out for his job. He sent me to get you.” Z Team stared at Glen as if they were waiting for the punch line. Finally, he said, “No. Really.”

Gunnar cleared his throat. “So. You’re saying that, at some point, we might be calling you boss?”

Glen responded with a shit-eating grin so big, it begged for comeuppance. Gunnar swept his gaze around the snug before it came to light on Glen with a chilling mix of challenge, mischief and amusement.

Torn leaned forward. “Seems we have limited time for the application of a right proper hazin’ then. Glen.”

Four sets of eyes darted to the movement in Glen’s throat when he swallowed

Getting your throat slit in a dark alley really sucks.

Even worse than that is having to watch your blood spill onto the garbage strewn pavement of that dark alley and being powerless to do anything about it.

I stood above my crumpled form watching in sick fascination as a dark pool of blood gathered around me. It really is amazing how much blood there is in a human body; you really can’t imagine it until you’ve seen it.

I was rooted to this spot from the first instant following the brutal attack. I was forced to watch as I died at my own feet. I wanted to cry out for help but my throat refused to produce any sound,

and I couldn’t seem to move my new spirit body. It was after three in the morning and the shadowed streets of West Philadelphia were quiet; no one came to help as I watched myself gasp for the last time.

I waited for the white light, for my spirit to rise up into the celestial city of the Almighty. When this didn’t happen, I braced myself for the impending descent into the fiery pits of hell. Still nothing happened.

A half hour passed before I saw the flashing lights of a slowly moving patrol car. An officer was moving along the sidewalk peering into the dark alleyways of the street while his partner trailed in their squad car. After a few more minutes of search- ing, a beam of light swept over my still body. The young cop let out a cry of discovery and ran forward drawing his pistol while calling out to his partner. Philadelphia’s finest had found me; unfortunately they were too late.

My name is Veronika Kane and I guess I’m a ghost now. Today, or I should say yesterday, was my twenty first birthday.

I’d gone out with some of my friends from the University of Pennsylvania to celebrate my now legal drinking age. We’d par- tied late into the night, getting smashed and having fun doing it. As the night wore on, friends left and new ones arrived, but in the end I was the last to say goodnight to my favorite club: The Electric Factory in Center City. I rode the bus back to West City where my apartment was located, but rather than transfer to a second bus I decided to walk the remaining seven or eight blocks to my home. The fall evening was comfortably cool and I wanted to sober up a little before bed. This was only my second time getting drunk, and I wasn’t used to the dizzying feeling that came with it. My ears were buzzing like the crackling speakers before Motley Crew took the stage, and the earth wouldn’t stop moving even when I paused to catch my breath.

The attack came suddenly, without warning. I was grabbed from behind by powerful arms. One quickly wrapped around my neck while the other pinned my arms to my sides. The man was tall. I’m five-nine but he towered at least six to eight inches over me. He picked me up off the ground and whispered in my ear.

“Shhhh … be a good girl and be still,” his voice was gruff and he stank of onions and rotten meat.

Fear washed over me like a bucket of cold water being dumped over my head. My stomach lurched and sudden nausea threatened to make me puke. I tried to struggle, but the intense

fear that wracked my gut and the sickening vertigo that was overwhelming my senses conspired to make the attempt at resistance futile. I fought against the rising panic that threat- ened to engulf me and tried to calm myself through meditation exercises. It was the most difficult thing I’d ever done, but the years of grueling training in my dad’s dojo kicked in and I was able to calm myself enough to think past the terror that made it near impossible for me to breath without hyperventilating.

The man slung me over his shoulder and I promptly barfed all over his back. He growled in anger and disgust but didn’t flinch or put me down to clean himself off. He just started walking. He carried me several blocks until he turned into the dank alley that I now found myself in. Throwing up had made me feel a little better. The world wasn’t spinning anymore, but I still felt weak and sick. Once we reached the back of the narrow alley, he swung me back around to his front but didn’t put me down. Instead he maintained a tight hold on me with one powerful arm. I heard him fumbling around for something in his coat, and I instinctively knew that I had to get away now. This was probably the only chance I’d get; I slumped against him as if I’d fainted. Fear and hope warred over me and threatened to make me puke again as the man loosened his grip on me and began lowering me to the ground. As soon as my feet hit the dirt and garbage strewn pavement I shot my right elbow back and connected with his ribs. He let go of me in surprise, and I launched myself forward, running for the street. But I was still intoxicated, and he was quicker than me. He cried out in rage and caught me from behind before I could escape. I whirled around and tried to push him back with a front kick but he sidestepped my clumsy move, and I stumbled past him and fell into a pile of garbage. Desperation overwhelmed the hope that had filled me just a few moments ago. I scrambled ungracefully back to my feet and started run- ning. Laughter chased me and all hope died when I realized I was going the wrong way. The back of the alley was blocked off.

My attacker didn’t bother trying to catch me this time though. He simply came up behind me as I desperately searched for another escape route: perhaps a basement window that I could crawl into. He reached around me and slit my throat with the long knife that he’d drawn from a concealed sheath. I watched, stunned, as my body fell forward. My spirit though remained erect, rooted to the spot.

I got my first glimpse of my attacker’s features as he stared down at me with wide and unblinking eyes. He was a giant of a man, standing almost six foot five and muscled like a body- builder. He was quite handsome with long, chestnut brown hair that was bound in a ponytail. His nose was long and narrow, while his cheeks were dimpled. He had a sharp chin and full lips; straight white teeth gleamed in the darkness as he smiled down at my crumpled form. His eyes were midnight black and seemed to hold a madness that was all consuming. He licked the blood coated knife that he’d slit my throat with and shook his head at me.

“That’s what you get bitch,” he said. “I could have taught you so much. You would have screamed so prettily, and you would have learned so much. But you had to ruin it all by trying to escape. I couldn’t let that happen. There’s still too much work to do, so many pretty things to teach how to scream. I can’t serve the Dark Master if I get caught. It’s such a waste, I know, but I just couldn’t take the risk with you.”

He removed a thin brush from an inner pocket of the jeans jacket he wore and dipped it in the expanding pool of blood at his feet. He then used the brush to write words upon the wall of a nearby building. I stared at the writing in surprise; it ap- peared to be in Akkadian, one of the later cuneiforms. Ancient languages were a particular interest of mine: Akkadian culture had figured prominently in several of my projects at Penn. I didn’t know what the words said though. I wouldn’t be able to decipher them without a few books that were in my apartment. As you might imagine, dead languages take a very long time to

master. I couldn’t begin to imagine how this guy could write this language, let alone understand it.

Satisfied with his handiwork, the killer surprised me once more by looking directly at me: the ghost me, as if he could see me. He grinned and then walked out of the alley leaving me alone to die.

READ AN EXCERPT:
The time seemed to pass quickly. Deziree had taken a second to pan around the room and felt the mild pangs of disappointed when she didn’t see Vegas anywhere. She took a look over the main bar and realized that some of the bottles were getting a low.
“Hey Danni,” she called to the bartender, “I’m going to take a break on the roof. When I get back, I will run out back and grab some refills.”
As she stepped out of the roof-access door onto the flat expanse of building, Deziree opened her pack of cigarettes, took one out, put it to her lips and lit it. She could feel his presence as she took her first drag. She exhaled and smiled when she heard his voice behind her.
“Those are bad for you, you know.”
When she spun around, he was standing a few paces away.
“Hey you.” As Deziree gazed at Vegas, her smile didn’t attenuate. Besides the fact that he was her best friend, she loved to look at him. He was by far the most beautiful creature she’d laid eyes on in her extraordinarily long life. He was stereotypically hot guy. Tall, dark and every bit of him was dangerous. He was six-two or three, the top of his smooth, bald head towering above her. She couldn’t imagine the number of razors he’d gone through over the centuries to keep that look. He had the perfectly chiseled appearance of a deadly hunter. Most people would have to spend hours in the gym every day for a body like that, but his undead status meant he didn’t even have to try. He would look like that forever. His eyes were the only tell-tale sign that he was a vampire. Those irises – each a pure gleaming gold with a dark-brown ring bordering the edge – were the only giveaway to the general public of what he was. She, on the other hand, could feel it. She could feel the electricity crackle in the air whenever her was around. In more than four hundred years, she had never met someone as exciting as Vegas, and she wanted him from the moment they first met. Why did we fight it?
“Can I bum one off you?” He nodded his head toward the cigarettes.
“You would make a terrible spokesperson for anti-smoking public service announcements,” she replied with a snarky tone. As she fumbled with the pack of cigarettes, he stepped closer to her. Her nerves hummed.
With a predatory smile that revealed his intentions, he closed what little remaining space there was between them. Reaching his hand around the back of her neck and tilting her head, he brought his lips down to meet hers. Her head spun with euphoria. His scent washed away every negative thought she’d had about him in the last two weeks. When the kiss finally broke, it was not her doing. Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes to see that he had that his smile had grown wicked.
“You didn’t answer me on the phone,” he purred. “Did you miss me?”
“Well, with the harem of men I have at my disposal, I couldn’t find the time to miss someone I only had a little fling with.” She stepped back and with a smirk, she added, “I mean, I didn’t even get breakfast.”
Vegas dropped his gaze. “I honestly am sorry about that. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I had a fantastic time and I didn’t want to leave, but I was contracted at the last minute and it was time-sensitive.”
Deziree smiled. “I’m just fucking with you, Michael. I’m not mad. I mean, I was initially. But I figured something must have happened. A call or a text would have been nice, but shit happens, right?”
“Well,” he said, his wicked grin firmly in place and his eyebrow cocked, “let me make it up to you.”
“We’ll see about that,” she replied as her heart pounded in her chest.
“I can hear your heart racing.” Stepping forward, he leaned down and kissed her again. When he broke away again, she found herself wishing that she didn’t have to go back to work. He leaned his forehead on hers and whispered, “My place when you get out?”
“Sure,” was her quick breathy reply.
“I have a few things to take care of,” he said quietly, “and then I will meet you here around the time you guys usually lock up.”
She nodded in response, and he turned, walked to the edge of the roof and dropped off the side. After standing there for a few moments in a daze, she finished her cigarette and headed back through the roof-access door to finish her shift.
