Set in a logging town on the lawless Pacific coast of Washington State at the turn of the twentieth century, a spellbinding novel of fate and redemption—told with a muscular lyricism and filled with a cast of characters Shakespearean in scope—in which the lives of an ill-fated family are at the mercy of violent social and historical forces that tear them apart.

Keen to make his fortune, Jacob Ellstrom, armed with his medical kit and new wife, Nell, lands in The Harbor—a mud-filled, raucous coastal town teeming with rough trade pioneers, sawmill laborers, sailors, and prostitutes. But Jacob is not a doctor, and a botched delivery exposes his ruse, driving him onto the streets in a plunge toward alcoholism. Alone, Nell scrambles to keep herself and their young son, Duncan, safe in this dangerous world. When a tentative reunion between the couple—in the company of Duncan and Jacob’s malicious brother, Matius—results in tragedy, Jacob must flee town to elude being charged with murder.

Years later, the wild and reckless Duncan seems to be yet another of The Harbor’s hoodlums. His only salvation is his overwhelming love for Teresa Boyerton, the daughter of the town’s largest mill owner. But disaster will befall the lovers with heartbreaking consequences.

And across town, Bellhouse, a union boss and criminal rabble-rouser, sits at the helm of The Harbor’s seedy underbelly, perpetuating a cycle of greed and violence. His thug Tartan directs his pack of thieves, pimps, and murderers, and conceals an incendiary secret involving Duncan’s mother. As time passes, a string of calamitous events sends these characters hurtling towards each other in an epic collision that will shake the town to its core. (from Goodreads)

Mini Review of Razor’s Edge (Edge # 2)

Razor's Edge Book Cover

Razor’s Edge by Shannon K. Butcher

Publication Date: November 1, 2011

Genre: Romantic Suspense

clearergoodreadsicon_thumb.png

Roxanne “Razor” Haught is an expert in stealth security for corporate espionage cases. But now she’s a target. Tanner O’Connell has no intentions of leaving Razor’s side. Despite her objections to having a “babysitter”, his orders as the newest member of the Edge are to watch her back. With a brainwashed assassin after his partner, Tanner cannot afford to let his desire for Razor interfere with his duty. His special ops skills may be all that stand between saving Razor-or losing her forever.

Mini Review red half size

I jumped into  this series starting with book two because it was available as an ebook from my library. I thought I’d take a chance to see if the Edge series was worth pursuing. For me, it is. Now, I plan to back up and start with the first in the series, Living on the Edge.

Here is a simplistic summary of the book:  The plot focuses on Roxanne “Razor” Haught who is an agent with Edge security.  After her recent mission fails, her boss Bella assigns her a “babysitter” named Tanner, who is ex-special forces and newly hired at Edge. The crux of the book centers on Razor’s search for her closest childhood friend, Jake, who is enlisted in the military and has been recruited to join a covert group that he believes will allow him to continue to serve his country. However, the members of this group become unwilling test subjects in a sinister project to produce killer soldiers, brainwashed to mindlessly follow commands.

Once Razor discovers Jake is in danger, she and Tanner, along with other members of Edge team work to find him and expose those responsible for what becomes known as the Threshold Project.  The chemistry between Tanner and Roxanne kept me engaged and motivated to keep reading to see how their relationship will develop. There is no nice tidy ending here only more questions and anticipation for what’s next.  Edge of Sanity continues the plot line.

Cover Reveal for Jennifer L. Armentrout’s new Wicked Trilogy

Jennifer L. Armentrout has a new urban fantasy trilogy coming out, and the first book, Wicked, is set to be released this December. What do you think of the cover?

Wicked AmazonGRSW

Wicked (A Wicked Saga # 1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

The Tiger’s Wife meets A History of Love in this inventive, lushly imagined debut novel that explores the intersections of family secrets, Jewish myths, the legacy of war and history, and the bonds between sisters.

When Eli Burke dies, he leaves behind a mysterious notebook full of stories about a magical figure named The White Rebbe, a miracle worker in league with the enigmatic Angel of Losses, protector of things gone astray, and guardian of the lost letter of the alphabet, which completes the secret name of God.

When his granddaughter, Marjorie, discovers Eli’s notebook, everything she thought she knew about her grandfather–and her family–comes undone. To find the truth about Eli’s origins and unlock the secrets he kept, she embarks on an odyssey that takes her deep into the past, from 18th century Europe to Nazi-occupied Lithuania, and back to the present, to New York City and her estranged sister Holly, whom she must save from the consequences of Eli’s past.

Cover Reveal for Hart Attack (Titan # 5)

Outside of Titan Group, there are few people that Roman Hart would die for. He’s a soldier, a protector, and he’s haunted that one of the people he should’ve been able to protect didn’t let him. That was years ago, and now a hardened heart and a cocky attitude are his impenetrable shields, until one woman—one challenge—drives him to distraction.

On the outside, Beth Tourne has it all. Luxury car, gorgeous condo, and a job partying with the rich and famous. It’s a plush CIA cover, but she wants more. Anything for an adrenaline rush that can override her guilty numbness and let her forget the tragedy she never saw coming.

Their scars make them perfect operatives. Their mirrored pasts give them deep, wounded reasons to stay alone. But the more they ignore the tension, the more vulnerable they become. Survival means trust. In one another, behind closed doors, and on the job. The only way they’re making it out alive is if they find peace while waging a war.

Book Chat – Current Sales & Recent Releases: Where do you find bargain books?

I love when I find a book from my wish list on sale. Since I read a lot of ebooks, I can usually find some pretty good deals and nothing beats finding a good freebie! Here are the most prominent ebook sales I’ve found so far this week that I’ll be adding to my online library.

E-book Sales

For fans of the BDB Series: The King: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood # 12) by J.R. Ward. The ebook is on sale for $5.49 right now on Amazon.  (Genre: Paranormal, Romance, Adult Fiction)

Ebooks for Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series (books 1-7)  are priced between $3.99- $ 4.99 on Amazon, which, I think, is a great deal! (Genre: Historical Fiction, Romance, Fantasy)

I don’t read historical romances that often, but I’ve heard such wonderful things about the Outlander series, and I know some people who subscribed to the cable network Starz  just to watch the series now that it has been adapted for the screen.  I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so for my birthday, I bought the first book, Outlander, as a treat, and I must say, I  was was quite impressed with the quality of the characters Gabaldon’s has created and her style of writing. The plot is epic, and it will suck you in fairly quickly, but don’t expect to read it in one day.

The first three books of Kristen Ashley’s Unfinished Hero Series are on sale for $.99 each on Amazon. (Genre: NA Fiction)

Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas # 1) by Dean Koontz is only $1.99  at the following online retailers. (Genre: Thriller)

Amazon:

B&N:  | Apple | Kobo

 E-book Freebies

Fans of Zombie Fiction might consider checking out this freebie: Fire: The Collapse (Elements of the Undead # 1) by William Esmont

B&N and  Amazon:

Hazardous Duty (Squeaky Clean # 1) by Christy Barritt is free on Amazon (Genre: Cozy Mystery)

Recent Releases from My Reading List

Pimento Cheese: The Cookbook: 50 Recipes from Snacks to Main Dishes Inspired by the Classic Southern Favorite by Perre Coleman Magness  was just released September 9, 2014. What can I say, I love Pimento Cheese!

Cold Blooded: A Thriller by Matt Cairns was recently released June 28, 2014 and it’s FREE right now on Amazon.

Of Monsters and Madness by Jessica Verday was just released September 9th. I’m excited to read this book because it seems to be written in the same classic style of gothic horror storytelling Edgar Allan Poe was known for – and the main characters are Edgar Allan Poe and Annabel Lee. (Genre: YA, historical fiction)

Unable to prevent the murder of his wife six years earlier, Jim is determined that the next time he is called upon to act, things will be different, and he can restore the sense of honor he believes he has lost.

His estranged brother Mark, an Army colonel commanding a firebase in the mountains of Afghanistan, sees his career winding down and wonders what lies in store when he comes home. After years of dedicated service to his country, he fears nothing else will measure up when he removes the uniform for the last time.

In lawless Somalia, al Qaeda chieftain Yusuf Shalita, tired of endless jihad, has decided to defect, in one last attempt at redemption. But Shalita has only met one American he has ever trusted, so he tells the CIA he will surrender himself to Jim Hayes, his old friend from their college days in Wisconsin. That demand will bring the Hayes brothers back together in a way they never imagined, as they fight to prevent a new and devastating terror attack on the very heart of America.

Salome Montgomery fears winter—the cold, the snow, the ice, but most of all, the frozen pond she fell through as a child. Haunted by the voices and images of the strange beings that pulled her to safety, she hasn’t forgotten their warning to “stay away.” For eleven years, she has avoided the winter woods, the pond, and the darkness that lurks nearby. But when failing health takes her grandparents to Arizona, she is left in charge of maintaining their estate. This includes the “special gifts” that must be left at the back of the property.

Salome discovers she’s a key player in a world she’s tried for years to avoid. At the center of this world is the strange and beautiful Nevin, who she finds trespassing on her family’s property. Cursed with dark secrets and knowledge of the creatures in the woods, he takes Salome’s life in a new direction. A direction where she’ll have to decide between her longtime crush, Colton, who could cure her fear of winter. Or Nevin, who, along with an appointed bodyguard, Gareth, protects her from the darkness that swirls in the snowy backdrop.

An evil that, given the chance, will kill her.

Free Post-Apocalyptic/Fantasy Book Tour for The Survivors (Life After War # 1)

Today, I’m happy to feature the Life After War series by Angela White. I read the first four books in this series, one right after the other back in 2012, and only stopped because the fifth installment had yet to be released. It’s an intriguing read with a varied cast of characters who struggle to survive after a nuclear holocaust destroys the world as they knew it. This multi-genre series stood out to me because it blends together science fiction, fantasy, adventure, as well as a touch of romance with the desolation and violence of a post-apocalyptic setting. It’s complex, but White makes it work.

The best part of this tour is that The Survivors, the first book in the series is available for FREE for the duration of the tour!  Read on to learn more about the series, watch the book trailer, and read an excerpt from book one.
