Flawed Perfection (Beautifully Flawed #1) by Cassandra Giovanni
Published March 7, 2014 / 450 pages
Genres: New Adult, Contemporary Romance
Bobby Beckerson was the American All-Star hockey player–he was the spitting image of perfection to his family. Goofy, sweet and undeniably gorgeous, he had everything but the one girl he wanted: River Ahlers.
River Ahlers is successful in everything but love. She’s been in love with Adam Beckerson since they were kids. Worst of all she’s stuck right in the middle of the brothers dueling over everything and anything, and she doesn’t even know she’s the ultimate prize.
Adam Beckerson was a boy with a guitar, a smile that sunk girls’ hearts and a stone wall around his own. He was anything but perfect, and no matter how hard he tried he was nothing compared to Bobby. Sweet, damaged, with boyish good-looks, nobody thought Adam loved anyone but himself.
Bobby loved River, River loved Adam and Adam only loved himself–or so everyone thought. Then one night everything changes, and as it threatens to destroy everyone involved a tragedy strikes that will break them all…
I came out wrapped in a towel and leaned over the island that separated the kitchen and the living area. Adam stood at the stove, spatula in hand, nodding his head as he sang.
“I didn’t know you could sing,” I teased, but his voice was so low now I could barely hear it.
He turned and kept singing to himself. Behind him I saw there wasn’t only bacon, but pancakes simmering in the pan.
“You should come over here more often,” I commented as I stood, hands on hips.
Adam’s voice slowly drifted off.
“Go put some clothes on,” he ordered, pointing the spatula at my bedroom. “You’re becoming more of a tease every day.”
“I didn’t think it was a tease unless it was something you wanted,” I found myself flirting back.
Adam bit his lower lips before turning back to the pancakes, voice cracking as he repeated, “Get some clothes on.”
“Better?” I asked.
“Much,” Adam replied looking over his shoulder at me in my jeans and band t-shirt. “Love that band.”
“Too bad I’ve never seen them,” I commented, taking a seat at one of the white plastic stools.
“Poser,” he teased as he poured me a glass of coffee, added sugar and creamer and handed it to me.
I took a sip and closed my eyes as the creamy taste washed over my tongue. “It’s scary you know exactly how I take my coffee.”
“It just shows I pay more attention than you think,” Adam commented as he took a sip out of his own cup.
“I can’t for the life of me understand how you know how I take my coffee.” I shook my head at him as I took another deep sip.
He piled two plates with bacon and pancakes, balancing them as he grabbed the syrup from the fridge and came to sit next to me.
“You love mangos, but they make your lips itch…your favorite drink is black cherry seltzer water. Your favorite wine is Kangaroo Moscato. If you could eat anything it would be fish and chips—a true New Englander. You hope fireflies are fairies that grant wishes, you’re scared of the dark, and,” Adam nodded down at my pancakes as I stared at him in shock; “You love your pancakes a little gooey in the middle, which is gross by the way.”
I couldn’t hold his gaze anymore and I found myself staring at his hand holding his fork mid-air.
“You’re amazing, you know that?” I finally whispered.
He leaned over and kissed the top of my head. “That’s what friends are for, right?”
There was that word, but did friends really act like this?

Cassandra doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing. In fact, the first time she was published was when she was seven years old and won a contest to be published in an American Girl Doll novel. Since then Cassandra has written more novels than she can count and put just as many in the circular bin. Her personal goal with her writing is to show the reader the character’s stories through their dialogue and actions instead of just telling the reader what is happening. In 2012 she became a published Young Adult author, releasing In Between Seasons (The Fall, #1) and the Amazon bestselling thriller, Walking in the Shadows. In 2013 she branched out by using her artistic illustrating talents to publish her first Children’s novel, The Adventures of Skippy Von Flippy: Tales of Friendship (Skippy Tales, #1). Cassandra released her first New Adult novel, Love Exactly, which became an Amazon Bestseller overnight in June of 2013. She’s currently working on her new New Adult Contemporary Romance, Beautifully Flawed. The first novel in the series, Flawed Perfection is scheduled to be published on March 7, 2014.
Besides being a writer, Cassandra is a professional photographer known for her automotive, nature and architectural shots. She is the owner of Gio Design Studios Photography and Gio Design Studios Publication Marketing . She is currently studying to receive a degree in Marketing. Cassandra is happily married to the man of her dreams and they live in the rolling hills of New England with the other loves of her life their dogs, Bubski and Kanga.
Where did the idea for the book come from?
I have a thing for love stories where best friends fall in love, and this idea came to mind that put a new twist on it—one that I had never thought I would really write. I’m personally not a fan of love triangles, so when I started writing one I was a bit leery. In the end I really loved the dynamic that it gave the novel. It was very important to me that the love triangle not go both ways, that the main character knew who she loved and stuck with it.
What traits do you share with the main character?
River is really stubborn and passionate. She truly cares deeply about those around her, but is also very private and selective about whom she lets into her life. I’m a lot like that too. She also is a photographer and marketer–just like me!
Did any real-life experiences influence the novel?
Adam is River’s best friend, and she is tormented with the fact that she’s in love with him but she doesn’t think he’s in love with her. I fell in love with my best friend, and I was afraid to tell him. I also didn’t think he shared those feelings. Towards the end of the novel there are some very intense moments of very deep sadness, of which I have not experienced. I try to live my character’s lives, and as they fall in love and lose things they love—I do too. I experience every tear with them.
Are there any other projects in the works?
I’m currently working on the remaining novels in the series: Pieces of Perfection, Broken Perfection and Finding Perfection. Yes, I’m working on all three at the same time. There is some overlap of time, so I have to write them this way.
A special thank you to Ms. Giovanni for the interview.
