Book Description

Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something…

Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns—Norse destiny deities—to punish her for defying them.

She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again.

But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves.

Book Review

I am already a fan of this series, and I couldn’t wait to read the second book in the Runes series. I highly recommend this series to those who enjoy YA literature and encourage you to start with the first book that introduces the main characters and immerses readers into a paranormal world centering around mythology, ancient magic, and romance. Runes was an awesome first book that left us with a one shock of a cliffhanger, and Immortals picks up the storyline two weeks later.

By the end of the first book, Raine realized that she was more than a typical seventeen-year-old with powers inherited from her mother.  Raine’s mother has brought in a Valkrie to become her trainer if she wishes to become immortal. After falling in love with Torin, Raine wanted nothing more than to become a Valkyrie  so they could always be together. Now, however, she’s not so certain that she wants to go forward with her training because of the punishment inflicted upon her by the deities of destiny or Norns.

When the story opens, Raine has lost Torin and is desperate to get him back. She’s already working on a plan to help Torin remember their relationship.  Of course, it isn’t easy, and much of the first part of the book is spent with her trying to help Torin get his memories back and feeling frustrated and heartbroken as she watches him with other girls. Torin is still the gorgeous, cocky Valkrie that she fell in love with, but now he has no interest in pursuing a relationship with her.  To compound this, the other students have become afraid of her after what happened at the last swim meet, and many wonder if she’s really a witch. Even when the situation seems hopeless, Raine perseveres because she is emotionally strong, fiercely loyal, and one of the most stubborn heroines I know.  She also has an advantage because she knows the depth of Torin’s love for her, and, just like that old adage says, love can conquer all.

Even though other students treat Raine like a freak, she still has her two best friends, Eirik and Cora to support and protect her. Both of them play a much more significant role in this book.  The truth about Eirik’s identity is finally revealed, and, wow, it was not what I expected. Even though Raine believes she and Eirik are just meant to be friends, she learns he needs her now more than ever before. His life is in danger, and, in her search to find the evil that shadows Eirik, she finds that everyone around her is a suspect, even those who seemed so trustworthy in the first book. What I like about Walter’s storytelling is that nothing is as obvious as it seems. Her characters and the conflicts they face are often unpredictable, and this is one of the main reasons I’m drawn to this series.

And yay! Andris is back along with Ingrid, two Valkryies who work with Torin to reap souls. Andris is one of my favorite characters because he can do something nice in one scene and then turn right around and behave like a jerk in the next.  Even though he has lost his mate, Maliina, Andris still keeps himself together but is as outrageous as ever.  A new immortal is introduced as well. Lavania has arrived to train Raine and teach her how to use the magic of runes. Unfortunately, her actions also make Raine question whether she is as trustworthy as she seems.

The plot becomes more complex as the story progresses. Raine discovers the truth about her identity, and it becomes clear why the Norns are so desperate to have her. Now, though,  she has the confidence to stand up the manipulative  Norns who have tried to keep her apart from Torin.  By the end of the book, friendships have been tested, and the dynamics of the characters’ relationships with one another have shifted.  The conclusion foreshadows some of the conflicts that will emerge in the rest of the series as the stakes get higher, but it also left me feeling content with the outcome until the next book is released.

I received a copy of ARC copy of Immortals from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I shook my head. “You can’t blame yourself. And these three Norns weren’t the ones who hurt me. They have their own agenda. Evil Norns caused the lightning.”

“These Norns are good? They looked mean.”

“They can be. Could we promise not to keep secrets from each other anymore?”

He grinned and gave me a thumbs up. Then the smile disappeared from his face. “Why didn’t he protect you?”

I winced at his tone and followed the direction of his gaze to Torin, who was now seated at a table with his entourage. “He tried. Norns are too powerful. It was hopeless.”

He wore a skeptical look. “Then what’s his problem?”

“What do you mean?”

“He couldn’t leave you alone while we were dating, and now he’s treating you like a stranger.”

“It’s not Torin’s fault. The Norns erased his memories.”

Eirik scowled. “Why? Norns only scramble Mortals’ memories.”

“They did it to punish me.”

“What? Why?” Cora entered the cafeteria, and his eyes zeroed in on her. She’d changed her T-shirt and pants for a dress that looked really great on her. She must have had it in her car because there was no way she’d driven to her house and back that fast. Eirik dragged his eyes from Cora. “Never mind. We’ll talk later,” he added just as Cora slid beside him.

“Talk about what?” Cora asked, her eyes volleying between us. “What did I miss?”

“I was telling Eirik about my psychic business and my rates.”

Cora laughed.

Eirik wore a bewildered expression since he had no idea what I was talking about, but he caught on fast. “Yeah, brilliant idea.”

“I’m going to be the accountant.” She bumped him with her shoulder. “You can be the muscle.”

Eirik flushed.
